10 useful tips for packing away your awning for the winter

Autumn is here, the temperature has dropped, and the season is changing fast. Like many others, you may be getting ready to clean and pack away your awning for the winter. It’s a good idea to do this thoroughly and gently – to keep your awning in great condition and ready for next season. We’ve put together 10 useful tips to help you do just that.

(1) Check your awning before taking it down

It’s easier to spot small rips, worn stitching or broken rubber straps while the awning is still standing. If you find any holes, you’ll need our Repair set A for acrylic or Repair set B for PVC.

(2) Note down any visible damage

Take a photo or make a note to help you locate the issue later. We recommend making repairs in the autumn, rather than waiting until the spring just before Easter.

(3) Rinse your awning a few days before taking it down

If needed, use our Isabella IsaClean products for washing the canvas and cleaning the windows.

(4) Choose a dry, calm day to take down your awning

Avoid wind and damp conditions, as they make the process harder and risk damaging the awning.

(5) Remove curtains and straps

Remove the curtains and all the rubber straps around the awning.

(6) Remove pegs

Pull up and clean all the pegs. Throw away any that are broken or bent.

(7) Be extra careful with removable sides and fronts

Pack them separately with sheets or cloth in between. The best method is to roll them on a carpet tube with sheets in between each layer - your windows will thank you in spring.

(8) Lay the roof section out flat on the grass

Ideally place it inside facing up to protect the outer surface. Fold the front and sides into the roof section, fold from one side in sections, and finally roll it up from the front – making sure the awning beading ends up on the outside of the roll.

(9) Store the awning

Store the awning in a dry, well-ventilated and mouse-proof place. You can use the original bag with all accessories, or another suitable storage solution.

(10) Check frames

Check and dry all frame parts thoroughly before storage. Never put the frame away damp - moisture can lead to corrosion or damage.

Final reminder: Taking proper care now means your awning will be in top condition and ready for the next season – and you’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing everything is clean, dry and stored the right way.
